The Japanese large rip saw and cross cutting saw were originally used for milling which today can be done faster and perhaps more accurately with large band saws.  However, these saws give one the ability to read the grain on a piece of wood and mill it so that unnatural cuts don't occur and cause the wood to warp and split to a large degree over time.  We typically use these saws in specific places to procure a rough finish to certain boards.
